Royal Albert Dock
If you speak to any resident of Liverpool, they will suggest that one of the first things everyone must do when arriving is visit the Albert Docks, and the best thing about this is that it’s completely free! This scenic, renovated area is home to a wide range of world-class art, the iconic Beatles Museum and an array of restaurants and bars (if you have a bit of money to spare).
Liverpool Cathedral
The Liverpool cathedral is a must-see for every student! This historic building is without pillars or pews, meaning that it can host huge concerts, exhibitions and fine dining on the main floor. Many of these events are free, so keep an eye out for anything they host in the future as you’re sure to have a brilliant time, surrounded by beautiful architecture. To top it off, the cathedral is actually the biggest in Britain and 5th biggest in Europe, so it’s definitely an essential trip for everyone who comes to liverpool. It’s even worth a visit if you aren’t attending an event, just to see the impressive structure and beautiful interior.
Museum of Liverpool
The wonderful Museum of Liverpool is the world’s first national museum devoted to the history of a regional city, so it’s definitely worth checking out. Being the newest addition to the National Museums Liverpool group, it has an eye-catching modern and sleek design. One visit here will allow you to immerse yourself in the glorious city and understand it’s unique contribution to the world. Some of the most treasured displays here include the stage where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met, the first Ford Anglia from Ford’s Halewood production line and a life-size Liverbird! And don’t forget, you can see every single one of these things completely free of charge.
Beatles Statue
If you’re looking for a quick activity to pass some time, we suggest visiting the Beatles statue on Pier Head for the perfect photo opportunity. These iconic Liverpudlians have been immortalised in this wonderfully executed bronze statue. The fact that it is located along the scenic quayside is a bonus – why not take a stroll along one of Liverpool’s most breathtaking areas, it may just become one of your favourite routes to take through the city.
Merseyside Maritime Museum
Located on the Albert Dock, the Merseyside Maritime Museum explores the history of the great port of Liverpool, providing an educational experience to visitors free of charge. There are 4 floors of galleries, each focussed on a different theme and full of information. This is the perfect way to pass a couple of hours, however if you are short on time we recommend paying special attention to the Titanic exhibition and Slavery Museum. To finish off the day, you can take a walk along the Albert Dock and experience the stunning scenery.
Liverpool Central Library
Dating all the way back to 1860, Liverpool Central Library has a unique blend of old and new architecture and is definitely worth visiting at least once during your time in Liverpool. As a student, you may spend a lot of your time in libraries completing work, but we promise you this will not be your typical experience. It is free and fully accessible, including a range of amenities such as free wifi, a roof terrace and a Tourist Information Centre. You can simply visit to take a walk around and marvel at the wonderful interior, but it’s also a great place to work as there are large study spaces and bookable meeting rooms available.
Money is definitely not essential for a great day out in Liverpool, and with so many free activities available it’s best to start fitting them all in sooner rather than later. In this historic city there is something interesting around every corner, so even just taking yourself out on a stroll could lead to an unforgettable adventure.
